Rossland. A town made for winter.

ROSSLAND. A small town in the West Kootenay region of British Columbia with a population of around four thousand. A little town once flourishing due to the late 1890’s gold rush, it is now renowned for the incredible mountain biking trails in the summer and the powder ski slopes in the winter.

There are many activities to partake in Rossland this winter, of which we have compiled our favourites:

Skiing and Snowboarding at RED Mountain Resort

The most iconic of all activities would be the amazing skiing and snowboarding opportunities at RED Mountain. It is only a short 5-minute drive from the Prestige Mountain Resort in Rossland, or you can utilize the shuttle bus which departs from the Resort daily. If you’re a guest of the Prestige, the shuttle cost is included in your stay! It is rated in the top 20 ski resorts in North America and holds over 100 marked runs which cover all abilities levels, perfect for the whole family.

Cat Skiing

RED Mountain is home to one of the world’s largest cat skiing operations. The snowcat skiing service provides separate trips for Expert, Advanced and Intermediate skiers and riders, allowing one to enjoy the trip with others of a similar ability. It may not be for everyone, but would be a unique experience when visiting Rossland during the winter season.

Fat Biking

The bulkier version of summer time mountain biking, fat biking has made its mark on the Rossland winter biking scene. It is a unique experience like no other and if you love summer biking, why not go ahead and give this new phenomenon a try. It will be sure to get your heart racing, while falling off one of these is a lot friendlier than that of the summer cousin. With snowy mountains in site for miles and miles, beautifully groomed paths, a fat tire bike under you, it is no wonder this sport is growing in popularity. There are a number of rentals available in multiple locations in Rossland along with lots of handy advice. As Nike would say, “Just do it.”

Curling
For larger groups of at least 16 (max 32), the Rossland Curling Club which opened in 1957 provides the opportunity to try one of the more meticulous sports in Rossland. The club is home to the Rossland Cup which is the oldest continually and actively played-for curling trophy in the world. Yes, the world. If this is not enough to entice you, curling club bookings include 2-3 hours of play time with bar service available.

There are plenty to choose from while making stops at local boutique shops, and they are the perfect place to stop in-between restaurants. Do make sure to stop at Gabriella’s within the Prestige Mountain Resort as it is a local’s favourite serving amazing Italian cuisine. It has been newly-renovated and offers an upscale dining experience with food that simply can’t be outdone.
