Why Exploring the Kootenays is Perfect for the Road-Tripping Adventurer

With breathtaking mountains unparalleled across North America, the Kootenays is home to some of the world’s best outdoor adventures. As a B.C. region that receives loads of champagne powder every year, this is a premium location for the adventurer seeking a riveting outdoor winter escapade. Here’s five can’t-be-missed activities.

Alpine Skiing!

When touring through the Kootenay region, you’ll pass by a myriad of small towns. These might include Nelson, Cranbrook, Rossland, and Radium. These small towns are each unique in their own way. They’re home to one-of-a-kind people, cuisine and each have their own rich history.

However, they all speak the same language–skiing.

The Kootenay towns are known nationwide for excellent alpine skiing. In fact, Kit Readhear, a CMH guide, stated that skiing in the Kootenays was like “swimming in the ocean after spending your life in a lake.”

For resort skiing, some of the Kootenays’ finest include RED Mountain Resort and Whitewater Ski  Resort.

Touring or Snowshoeing

If you’re feeling adventurous, there’s also a myriad of backcountry touring companies across the Kootenays. As long as you’re equipped with avalanche training, suitable equipment, and a great tour guide, this will be an experience you won’t soon forget. If you’d prefer to strap on a pair of snowshoes instead of skis, many touring trails are perfectly accessible via snowshoeing. If you choose to explore Rossland, these adventures could lead you to a series of cabins nestled in the mountains, hidden by the forests. Such cabins include Mosquito Cabin or a small triangular cabin in Meadow Mountain.

Fat Biking

Alternatively, you can always try your hand at Fat Tire Biking. This form of winter transportation is quickly becoming a popular sport across B.C. and is perfect for the mountain biking enthusiast. You can check out this fast growing sport every January during the Rossland Winter Carnival.
