With pristine lakes, oceans, and expansive forests, British Columbia is adored for its stunning summers. Communities and cities across B.C. certainly embrace this, encouraging everyone to come and visit with a variety of unique events that speak to our province’s culture and rich history.
The Rossland Winter Carnival is the longest running carnival in Canada. Started in 1898 by Norwegian miner Olaus Jeldness, this event incorporates a range of diverse activities that speak to a variety of cultures. Over the course of the 3-day festival, events include a music festival, fire dancing, luge lessons, beer gardens, telemark skiing, and snowboard racing down Red Mountain. The event also offers a range of delicious food, including items such as Ukrainian and Russian Borscht!
As a festival that has grown larger every year, this is certainly one of Canada’s ‘can’t be missed’ events.
The Kootenay Coldsmoke Powder Festival is one of the premier events for mountain enthusiasts. It kicked off as a grassroots gathering where mountaineers of all levels could celebrate the unparalleled Kootenay mountain ranges.
At the event, being held February 24-26, attendees can enjoy a film festival, dance competitions, an incredible backcountry tour with a CMCG guide, or a racing randonnée on a punishing course. This myriad of incredible events is sure to satisfy someone who loves getting outside and meeting great people!
The Slush Cup is a way of bidding adieu to winter. As the snow melts on the mountains, people gather from across the Kootenay and Interior regions to celebrate with the ‘Slush Cup’. This competition, being held April 16, is hosted at Kicking Horse and invites well-seasoned spring time skiers and snowboarders to dress up in costumes and see if they can make it over a 75-foot pond of freezing water. Talk about a unique event!
